This is an establishment that cares about its students and you can see that from coach Takyoshi's attention to detail and his enthusiasm for teaching in every class. If you or your child wants to learn bjj, I can't think of a better place to train.

Fantastic experience: Incredible academy! Ikehara is a one of a kind environment to learn both jiu jitsu, self defense and build a healthy and positive lifestyle. From a coaching perspective, you are lucky enough to train under Takeyoshi, who has dedicated his life to the martial art. As a fifth Dan Blackbelt, Takeyoshi has >30 years of experience combined with a patient, detailed and perceptive teaching style. He is able to take people with varying levels of jiu jitsu knowledge, from outright beginner to seasoned black belts and improve both the technical and physical condition of his students. Having been a member of multiple Jiu jitsu gyms around the world, I am amazed by the environment Ikehara provides for training. This is a constructive, positive and friendly environment that supports the training agenda of both hobbyists through to competitors. Each session is broken into: physical conditioning, technical demonstrations and when students are ready, live sparring to practice (in a safe and monitored environment) the skills being taught. There is also direct access to the coaches at all times, meaning any questions are addressed immediately and techniques are corrected quickly to optimise training sessions. Additionally, this gym frequently has a combination of beginners through to highly advanced jiu jitsu practitioners- meaning that you can train with people who both match your level and with more advanced practitioners. Often there are guest coaches who will teach students new and exciting styles. The time table is flexible with both morning and evening classes- combined with two highly attended 'open mats' to practice skills with new opponents from other academies. As a Brown belt (circa. 10 years of training) I cannot recommend this gym highly enough. Having trained here for two years, my personal jiu jitsu has improved exponentially as a direct result of being coached by Takeyoshi in his unique, friendly and challenging environment. If you want to give jiu jitsu a try for the first time or you are considering a new gym to continue your training- THIS IS THE PLACE to do it!!!
